First draft July 1980

This is a show that is set in modern times and is about the talented song writer Ben Cummings . Ben lives with his Mum and Dad and with his two sisters Jill and Josy and his older brother Richard. His life is a typical one, that of hectic school and homework and little time to practise his songs with his friends Peter, Jep and Owen . However one day the music teacher hears them and dedicates some time in order to help them by suggesting they enter a talent x factor style contest on the sea front. How they get on how they cope with the jealousies of their friends and families becomes the whole basis of this show.

There are some fabulous scenes and there is plenty of scope for music teachers to form a boy band or any band if it comes to that.

The first draft production in July 1980 was the most successful first draft production of any of these shows with the exception of ‘Beechings Folly’

The music is simple and the songs are scored for voice and piano. And there are some band parts. Songs like ‘I wanna be a pop star’ ‘ songs like this I try to write every day’ ‘ high notes and low notes’ ‘I wish I was a star’ ‘If I had time’ ‘Will I ever be a star ?’ ‘Its an education for life and living ‘ ‘Action, aggro!’ ‘So no more of this business of a star !’’Wait for the show’’ ‘’Time to work on something good’’ and a few more!

There are around thirty characters with plenty of chorus action

Costumes are a delight as they are just normal clothes! Stage sets can be as the group wants. A glitter curtain for the talent contest scene is suitable and makes a good contrast to the other scenes.
